Company Development

1913
On 15 November Josef Eschenbach establishes the company named after himself with the objective of setting up a wholesale business for optical articles and technical drawing instruments.

1918-1937
The Eschenbach company grows steadily. The first sales documents and catalogues are printed. Even in difficult economic times, such as 1929 to 1933, the company succeeds in growing. With the spread of automobiles, new target groups are added.

1954
Move to new premises in Hegelstrasse in Nuremberg, Germany. As early as the 1950s, Rudolf Eschenbach demonstrated his vision by being one of the first German companies to import binoculars from the Far East in addition to production in Nuremberg.

1988
With the introduction of the TITANflex collection in Germany, Eschenbach revolutinised the market for frames with a superior innovation and laid the foundation for later leadership in the spectacle frame market in Germany.

 

Since 1990

the network of established distribution offices in Austria, Switzerland and the USA has been successively increased to 12 today with the objective of providing trade and consumers with optimum service.

 

1994
The start of a success story with the name Humphrey´s.

In 1994, Eschenbach introduces a new spectacle brand for young and fashion conscious people. As the sunglasses collection is very well received by the market, the Humphrey´sframe collection soon follows.


Humphrey´s recipe for success is the quick implementation of trends, paired with riotous colours at competitive prices. And all this with the usual Eschenbach quality.

1996
Inauguration of the new technology centre in Nuremberg, Germany. Vision aids and lenses are developed and manufactured here under optimum conditions.

1997
Production of lenses with the cera-tec hard coating which was developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Silica Research.

 

1999
Hannover Finanz, one of the most prestigious German equity investment companies takes shares in the company. The Eschenbach family hands over operational management to outside managers who also invest in the company.

 

2000
Expansion of capabilities in optical precision injection moulding with the commissioning of the first ultra precision turning and milling machine with associated precision measurement technology.

2002
With the implementation of diffractive optics in high-volume production, Eschenbach sets a milestone in the development of vision aids (noves, mobilux far and other products).

 

In the same year, Eschenbach acquires the spectacle brand Brendel, established in 1901, and thus expands its portfolio of frames in the ladies segment.

2007
Barclays Private Equity
is acquiring the Nuremberg-based Eschenbach Group together with the company's management. The previous owner HANNOVER Finanz and the family of Gerd Eschenbach are surrendering all their shares. The family of Walter Eschenbach will retain its shares in the company.

 

2008
Eschenbach Group is acquiring International Eyewear Limited, one of Great Britain’s leading suppliers of eyewear and prescription sunglasses.

2009
With the strategic alliance between the Optical Division and Ash Technologies, Eschenbach becomes the first company in the world to offer the full range of optical and electronic vision aids.

In the same year, Eschenbach Optik GmbH will take over the licence for Marc O’Polo Eyewear. The new partnership between Marc O’Polo and long-established Eschenbach brings together two strong companies to form the perfect combination for the creation of an outstanding range of products.

2009
Tura and Eschenbach Group to merge. Tura has been active on both the U.S. and Canadian markets for more than 70 years as one of the top providers of eyeglass frames and sunglasses.
